Africa-Press – Malawi. The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has opened investigations into the food packs contract which Football Association of Malawi (Fam) awarded to an unnamed company.
The association is said to have awarded a contract to the company to supply food packs worth millions of kwacha without following procedures. ACB Public Relations Officer Egrita Ndala confirmed that investigations had commenced on the matter.
“The Anti-Corruption Bureau is conducting an investigation in relation to the food packs contract awarded by Fam. The bureau cannot divulge more information at this point as the investigation is still underway,” she said in a written response.
Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda was yet to respond to our questionnaire yesterday. However, according to Fam website, the association distributed relief food packs to 2,490 players and officials of regional leagues and Women’s Football League teams.
The association distributed the food packs, valued at K10,000 each, for a period of seven months. At the time the food packs were meant to cushion some stakeholders who were facing hardships following the suspension of football due to the Covid pandemic.
Fam president Walter Nyamilandu told the website, back then, that the association used K360 million of its own money to launch the Covid Relief Fund to bail out its stakeholders before Fifa came up with a bailout plan of $1.5m.
“We made a pledge to help our players and officials who are suffering at the moment as they have lost source of income because they depend on football for a living. I had a chat with the players and I was touched to learn about their plight in the absence of football,” he was quoted as saying.
