Africa-Press – Malawi. Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has confirmed that for a third consecutive time, Orlando Stadium will host the clash between Malawi and Cameroon.

Flames will face Cameroon in the 2022 Qatar World Cup qualifier on November 11 before meeting Mozambique at a venue yet to be identified by the Mambas.

Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda said they will not change the venue in the meantime. “We confirmed with Caf that we will use the same stadium [Orlando] for our home match against Cameroon,” Gunda said in a brief response.

The Flames also hosted Mozambique and Ivory Coast in the same World Cup qualifiers at the same venue. Malawi beat Mozambique 1-0 at Orlando Stadium but lost 3-0 to Ivory Coast at the same venue.

Fam had opted for Orlando Stadium after Caf rejected Bingu National Stadium from hosting international matches due to its poor condition. BNS failed two Caf tests, which left Fam with no option but to continue using the borrowed home in South Africa.

By hosting Mozambique and Ivory Coast, Fam spent about K18 million in hiring the pitch. In addition, Fam spent over K40 million on air tickets, accommodation and food.

As hosts, the association will be responsible for the welfare of the match officials and all match details. Sports analyst George Kaudza-Masina said Fam and government should work together.

“Going forward, Fam and the government should work as partners to ensure that all the stadiums are in good shape. It was a shame for the country to play home matches away from home,” he said.

The Flames’ qualification dream ended following back-to-back defeats to Ivory Coast. Ivory Coast lead Group D with 10 points from four matches, followed by Cameroon on nine points from the same number of matches. Malawi are third with three points following three defeats and one win in four matches. Mozambique anchor the group with a point.
