Africa-Press – Malawi. World football government body, Fifa, has approved Football Association of Malawi (Fam)’s application on Talent Development Scheme (TDS). Newly appointed Flames coach Mario Marian Marinica has said he will use the project to unearth talent and implement his philosophy.
According to a letter dated April 19 2020, Fifa notified Fam that Serame Letsoaka, who is one of Fifa’s regional technical consultants, was appointed to support the local body in realising the first steps of the TDS project. The TDS project has four pillars including expertise, training and education, training centre and funding.
“Expertise – the combined know-how of our group to help each member association create a state-of-the-art and tailor-made talent development programme, training and education– delivered both on-site and online through the recently launched Fifa Training Centre,” the letter, which Technical Director Steven Martins and Chief of Global Football Development Arsene Wenger, have signed reads.
In reaction, Marinica said the project will be used for scouting talent. “We are targeting about 20 to 30 players who will be trained in the fast and very fast football philosophy which we have adopted at the national team.
“We want to work with players aged between 15 and 20, both men and women, who will be accompanied by their coach for a period of six months. The aim is to produce quality players,” he said.
National Football Coaches Committee Chairperson Aubrey Nankhuni said the programme was crucial if Malawi were to match continental heavyweights. “We welcome the programme as it will unearth hidden talent in every district. We will have some centres in some districts for implementation,” he said.
