Finance Minister Chithyola dodges media on 44% Malawi Kwacha devaluation prospects

Africa-Press – Malawi. After advertising the long awaited press briefing on the explanation of 44 percent devaluation, Minister of Finance,Simplex Chithyola walk out of Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) conference room soon after reading his statement without taking questions from the Media.

Members of the media felt used for the minister to dodge the questions instead of taking questions that could have answered the voice of Malawians. In his remarks, Minister of Information , Moses Kunkuyu said the minister will organize another platform for questions.

Kunkuyu said the minister has been in the office for a few days in the office that he is still learning. He said the minister was only meant to deliver a press statement to the malawians through the podium. During his speech, Minister of Finance announced that all black markets for foreign exchange are banned effective today.

Chithyola to cushion devaluation effects, Chakwera Tonse government will be paying 184,920 local house holds MK50,000 for three months and 105,000 people in the urban with 150,000 upkeep for the same three months. Soon after Devaluation, Malawi Regulatory Authority (MERA) was quick to announce the hiking of fuel and Escom tarriffs.
