Flames Coach Mabedi refuses Gaba to join squad over indiscipline

Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi’s Flames coach Patrick Mabedi has refused to allow South Africa-based forward Frank Gabadinho Mhango to join the squad in Liberia ahead of Friday’s 2026 World Cup Qualifier, citing disciplinary reasons.

This comes after the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) made fresh arrangements for the player to travel to Monrovia today after missing his initial flight to Blantyre from Johannesburg on Sunday.

FAM president Walter Nyamilandu told The Nation online that the coach’s decision was “purely on disciplinary grounds and that the door has not been closed on Gaba”.

Mhango said he is ready to travel to Liberia if fresh arrangements are made ahead of this Friday’s 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifier. Mhango was supposed to meet his teammates in Addis Ababa but missed a flight from Or Tambo, South Africa to Ethiopia on Sunday.

The Moroka Swallows striker hinted that flights from South Africa to Liberia are available every day. “Indeed, I missed the flight on Sunday. At first, I thought my flight was at 1 pm but after I arrived at the Airport, I was told the flight was at 11 am,” Mhango said.

According to Mhango, a return ticket from Johannesburg to Liberia costs about R40,000 (about MK4 million). Goalkeeper Brighton Munthali joined the rest of the team at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, en route to Liberia.

Meanwhile, the Flames are on their way to Liberia for this Friday’s match. The team left Bole International Airport on Tuesday morning, November 14, 2023. The Flames will host Tunisia at Bingu National Stadium on Tuesday.
