Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi government has been dared again to review laws that protect minority groups including of lesbians, Gays, Quer, Bisexual and intersex (LGBTQI) to access quality Health service in public facilities.
Malawi’s MSRHR Alliance, vice chairperson, Donald Makwakwa made the call on Friday during a day workshop on sexual reproductive health. Makwakwa said the workshop seeks to review state implementation progress of United Nations state parties 2020 Universal periodic recommendations.
He said considering the next UPR reporting session in November Malawi SHRS Alliance and CSOs partners will be engaging government and other stakeholders to review the UPR state party recommendations implementations progress in Malawi.
Makwakwa said the country is left behind in respecting Human rights as the minority grouping are left behind. He said leaving behind the minority grouping in health provision leads to more transmission of disease as are not treated.
On behalf Civil Society Organisations (CSO), OXFAM project Coordinator, Doreen Thom said her organization focuses on advocacy that will be looking forward to government implementation on issues to do with sexual rights in related to UPR call.
Malawi laws do not recognise LGBTQI community as the constitution regards the grouping existence as illegal. UPR review is one of the activities that Malawi SHRS Alliance is implementing under the bodily autonomy and integrity (BAI) project with support from aids and rights Alliance of southern Africa (ARASA).
