Information Minister Moses Kunkuyu has said the ministry intends to introduce policies aimed at ensuring that postal and courier services benefit people based in rural areas of the country. Kunkuyu said this on Friday during 2022 World Post Day commemorations held in Ntcheu District.
“The ministry will, through the regulator [Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra)], put in place policies that will aim at providing incentives to operators willing to go into rural areas so that, at the end of the day, even those living in remote areas can be easily accessing postal services,” he said.
Kunkuyu said the government is committed to ensuring that people living in rural areas no longer cover long distances to urban areas, where such services are being offered.
Meanwhile, stakeholders have expressed worry over increased numbers of unlicenced courier service providers in the country. “People are just coming in to offer courier services without being licenced. This is not good,” DHL International Malawi Limited Managing Director Victor Sitima said.
He also asked Malawi Police Service and Malawi Revenue Authority officers stationed in airports to be assisting courier service providers in time when collecting their packages.
At the event, which was observed under the theme ‘Post for Planet’, Kunkuyu handed over a computer lab that Macra has renovated to Ntcheu District Council. World Post Day is observed on October 9 every year but 2022 commemorations were held in Ntcheu on February 10 2023 due to unspecified reasons.
