Government unveils Health Sector Strategic Plan

Africa-Press – Malawi. The government, through the Ministry of Health, Thursday unveiled the 2023-30 Health Sector Strategic Plan III and 2023-30 Health Financing Strategy which seek to improve healthcare service delivery in Malawi.

The strategies are expected to facilitate the creation of a unified plan, meaning that they will have a single budget and one monitory and evaluation system.

The key strategic objective of the Health Financing Strategy is to mobilise funds that will enable the health sector to deliver essential health services.

Speaking in Lilongwe during the launch, Health Minister Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda said the vision of the two strategies is to have a fully functional healthcare system that supports the achievement of universal aspirations.

“We used to implement so many strategies which were difficult to follow up on and monitor but this new plan means all of us, the government and partners, will put our resources in one plan and address our priorities together.” Chiponda said. Health Donor Group Chairperson Kelsey Markovic said the strategies will help implementers use resources efficiently and effectively.

“We, as donors, feel that this is a perfect idea because Health Sector Strategic Plan III will help in outlining and setting priorities on what it will take to achieve the health goals for Malawi and implementers will work towards that,” Markovic said.

She further proposed that the government should orient the health sector on how to implement the strategies. Health rights advocate Maziko Matemba said the new strategies are unified and will instill confidence in donors.
