Africa-Press – Malawi. Lilongwe-based gospel group Great Angels choir on Sunday performed at Robin’s Park in Blantyre after a long time, kick-starting their ‘Nza Yahweh’ nationwide tour. The concert attracted an impressive audience that enjoyed gospel vibrations, having missed gospel shows for some time due to Covid.
Great Angels, which offered songs from their yet to be released album titled Ufumu Umodzi Siuukilana and their other albums, also took advantage of the show to raise funds to support Soldier Lucius Banda, who is in need of medical attention alongside his brother Sir Paul and Francis.
The fundraiser, which was conducted towards the end of the show raised close to K93,000. “We just thought we should take advantage of the show to raise funds to go towards supporting our hero Lucius Banda,” the group’s music director Ephraim Zonda said.
Ahead of the concert, Great Angels Choir also cheered Lucius at his home in Balaka District. The group, which took time out to offer songs from the latest album such as ‘Nza Yahweh’ and ‘Ndizingwa’, also used the concert as a pre-album launch warm up.
“It’s been tough with Covid, hence failing to make progress in our projects and that includes the latest album.
We also lost our producer Joseph Tembo and then the producer we are working with Amos Mlolowah was busy with other projects. We are working hard to have the launch next month and we pray that Covid goes away,” Zonda said.
He said they made sure that people were safe inside the hall during the concert. “We disinfected the hall, we made sure temperature was being checked on people before entry and people were sanitising and at the same time going in with masks,” Zonda said.
Apart from Great Angels, some of the acts that blessed souls with their songs on the day included Pastor Wycliffe Chimwendo, Limbani Simenti, Thocco Katimba, Ethel Kamwendo Banda and Ndirande Anglican Voices.
There was also a surprise guest in Wendy Harawa, who did not perform live but used a CD to offer the track ‘Akuwona’ which features Kenyan artist Guardian Angel. Tuesday Wendy released a new song titled ‘Zikomo’ in which she has collaborated with Uganda’s Levixone.
