Africa-Press – Malawi. Prophet David Mbewe has said that he has no intention to form a political party or become State president. Mbewe, who once attended a Democratic Progressive Party presidential aspirants meeting in Mangochi, then joined the People’s Party (PP) before making a U-turn hours later, is leader of a movement called Freedom of Worship and Economic Liberation.

Speaking in ‘Times Exclusive’ program on Malawi’s leading television station Times Television, Mbewe said his intention is to see Malawians being liberated from poverty.

“Our movement is aimed at seeing Malawians living a comfortable life. We would like to see people sharing the little that they have and if to achieve that one needs to be president, then I will but what I can say is that I do not hold any presidential ambitions [save for the ambition] to bail my fellow Malawians out of poverty,” Mbewe said, adding that the movement might be turned into a pressure group in future.

Mbewe could not explain why he had to change his mind after announcing that he had joined PP. He further asked the country’s leadership to work with the church so that it can help in addressing some of the challenges besetting the country.

However, political analyst Ernest Thindwa said Mbewe has no influence to make it big in politics. “He may have managed to mobilise members of the faithful but I doubt if he can transfer the same to politics because it is a different game and I do not think he has that influence to make it big on the political arena,” Thindwa said.
