Chief Justice Rizine Mzikamanda has said the country’s Judiciary is striving to enhance the skills of personnel in handling issues related to fair trade and competition laws.

Mzikamanda said this in Salima District Thursday during the inaugural Malawi Judges’ Workshop on Competition and Fair Trade, which seeks to orient them to issues such as Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) Competition Law.

The goal is to improve regional coordination in addressing competition-related cases and promoting consumer protection efforts.

“The expectation of the Malawi Judiciary is that we will improve our skills in the manner in which we handle matters affecting competition laws in the country as they tend to be contentious,” Mzikamanda said.

He said Malawi was lagging behind in both free trade and regulated free trade issues compared to neighbouring countries such as Zambia.

MWEMBA—This workshop is very importantHe also said other countries, including Kenya, were performing well.

He is optimistic that Malawi can tap from their experiences.

“Our colleagues are more experienced, in terms of free trade and regulated free trade, and we expect to learn from them,” he added.

On his part, Comesa Competition Commission Chief Executive Officer Willard Mwemba said requisite knowledge was key to the resolution of cases.

“This workshop is very important as judges are custodians of order in all aspects of life and they should also be custodians of order in the economic affairs of our countries,” Mwemba said.
