Kaliati Calls for New Investigation into Chilima Crash

Africa-Press – Malawi. UTM Leader in Parliament Patricia Kaliati has delivered a powerful and emotional appeal in the August House, calling for a fresh and independent investigation into the tragic plane crash that claimed the life of Malawi’s former Vice President Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima, alongside eight others, on June 10, 2024.

Speaking with visible emotion and conviction, Kaliati said the loss of such towering national figures demands more than condolences — it demands truth, accountability, and justice.

“We cannot continue losing key national leaders and outstanding citizens in such tragic and mysterious circumstances,” she said. “The nation deserves to know what really happened. Families deserve closure. Malawi deserves answers.”

Kaliati urged the Minister of Homeland Security to initiate a full-scale inquiry into the Chikangawa plane crash, emphasizing that only a transparent investigation can restore public confidence in the systems meant to protect national leaders and citizens alike.

The fiery UTM leader said the country has lost too many prominent individuals under unclear conditions, and that the cycle must end.

“Every life matters — but when those in the cockpit of our national destiny perish this way, it shakes the entire country. We owe it to them, and to the nation, to find out why and to make sure it never happens again,” she stressed.

The Malawi Defence Force Dornier 228 aircraft, which carried Dr. Chilima, former First Lady Patricia Shanil Muluzi, and seven others, crashed in the Chikangawa Forest Reserve in Nkhata Bay District while en route from Mzuzu to Lilongwe. All nine on board died.

The tragedy plunged the nation into mourning and left lingering questions about air safety protocols, decision-making processes, and accountability within the chain of command.

Kaliati’s call in Parliament has reignited public debate and rekindled the country’s collective grief — but also its determination to seek the truth.

As the chamber fell silent after her statement, one message resonated clearly: Malawi cannot afford to move on without answers.
