Africa-Press – Malawi. The Ministry of Lands has chided people who are selling land to foreigners, citing Lilongwe as one of the areas where the practice is rampant. Lands Deputy Minister Deus Gumba expressed the concern when he engaged traditional leaders in Lilongwe on Friday.
He took advantage of the meeting to sensitise the traditional leaders to provisions of the Customary Land Act. “The practice of selling land is prohibited under provisions of the current Act. More so because land belongs to the Government of Malawi.
“The laws were amended recently, in March 2022 to be precise. As such, people are not supposed to sell land, even if it is bare. To this effect, we, as the government, are worried that some people in Lilongwe West are selling land to foreigners.
“We are trying to teach people that this is not allowed under the current laws. In fact, people should not be selling land because this is the only property that God gave us and, for the sake of our children, that is the only thing that our children have,” he said.
Gumba said if Malawians are not careful, they will find themselves displaced by foreigners. Lilongwe Chiefs’ Council Chairperson, Senior Chief Kalumbu, commended the government for amending provisions of the Act to give Malawians ownership over land.
He condemned those that sold land in Lilongwe West, saying their actions are counter-productive. “What has happened in Lilongwe West is very sad,” Kalumbu said.
