Africa-Press – Malawi. Tributes continue to pour in for prominent lawyer and former Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director Alexius Nampota who died on Saturday night at Blantyre Adventist Hospital after a short illness.
His brother Gregory said the death was a big loss to the family. Malawi Law Society (MLS) president Patrick Mpaka also described the ex- ACB chief’s death as a big blow to the legal fraternity.
“It is an extensive loss. He was the epitome of professionalism as far as integrity, humility and respect for fellow lawyers of all age groups is concerned, but without ever departing from his duties to his clients and to the law,” Mpaka said.
He added that at a time MLS is emphasising discipline and integrity among its members, “it is unfortunate to lose such as rare breed” who was acting as a role model to up-and-coming lawyers.
“While he was into private practice, [Nampota] made himself available for public service and twice served as the director of ACB. We condole with the family as much as we mourn the loss to the profession,” Mpaka said.
Seasoned lawyer, Patrice Nkhono, who is a senior counsel, said he knew Nampota as his senior in law school at Chancellor College, now University of Malawi, before joining him two years later at Wilson and Morgan Law Firm.
“Between him and Justice John Mashikizo Chirwa, they showed me the ropes around the practice of the law. I will surely miss him because I learnt a lot from him that stood me in my professional life over the years,” Nkhono said in his tribute.
Several other lawyers took to the social media to express their shock at the death of Nampota. According to the late lawyer’s family, he was born on May 11, 1962 and hailed from Khumulike Village, Traditional Authority Ndalama in Thyolo District.
His body is expected to depart for Luchenza Tuesday morning where a funeral mass will be conducted followed by the burial ceremony. Nampota is survived by a wife and three children. In his career, spanning several years, he represented in court cases several high-profile individuals including business magnate Thom Mpinganjira.
