Africa-Press – Malawi. President Lazarus Chakwera has condemned Sudanese military officials for taking over power in that country.
The development comes after the African Union (AU) has announced the suspension of Sudan from all its activities after the country’s military overthrew the civilian-led transitional government in a coup.
The AU Political Affairs Peace and Security (AUPSC) arm tweeted Wednesday that “AUPSC decides to suspend the participation of the Republic of Sudan in all AU activities until the effective restoration of the civilian-led Transitional Authority; welcomes the release of the PM [Prime Minister]; calls for the immediate release of the ministers & civilian officials in detention”.
In the France 24 interview with Marc Perelman, Chakwera said what has happened in Sudan is not the African way of doing things.
He urged African countries to embrace the spirit of Zambians, who recently peacefully elected Hakainde Hichilema, 59, as president.
He was vying for the presidency for the sixth time and successfully defeated the incumbent Edgar Lungu by 2,810,777 votes to 1,814,201.
