Africa-Press – Malawi. President Lazarus Chakwera, who is the governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate in the September 16, 2025 Presidential Election, has said his administration’s youth-focused initiatives will be championed by his youthful running mate Vitumbiko Mumba, who is Industry and Trade Minister.
Speaking in Luwerezi area, Mzimba District, Monday, Chakwera described Mumba as a “passionate” and “capable leader” who embodies the aspirations of Malawi’s youths.
“Young people have a true friend in Mumba,” Chakwera said. “He is someone I can trust to speak for me, even run in my place. That is how much faith I have in his ability to represent the youth in my government.”
He said his decision to settle for Mumba as MCP running mate was not just based on age but on his novel ideas and a people-centred approach to politics.
Apart from youth empowerment, the President outlined a bold vision to transform the agriculture sector through irrigation, particularly in the Northern Region.
“We want to turn Luwerezi and Khosolo into a food basket for Malawi,” Chakwera said. “Let us utilise the vast water resources here and invest in irrigation to ensure food security.”
The President further expressed willingness to continue initiating development projects in all areas of the country.
“We shall also continue ensuring that every Malawian is safe and we guarantee safety for people with albinism. They will continue living in peace,” Chakwera said.
He added that if re-elected, his MCP administration would implement several initiatives aimed at improving the lives of Malawians.
He cited the Tsogolo Account, where his administration would be allocating K500,000 to every newborn to be accessed when they are 18.
“This is on top of ensuring that there is food security, good infrastructure, improved public service delivery and the creation of millionaires,” Chakwera said.
The President’s remarks come as he intensifies his campaign across the Northern Region, where he is seeking a fresh mandate to continue advancing his development agenda.
Taking his turn, Mumba appealed to youths and people in Mzimba to vote Chakwera back into power, saying the President has a lot to offer.
“My partnering with Dr Chakwera offers the country a breath of fresh air. This is the first time a sitting President has chosen a youthful running mate. Support this team by ensuring that you vote for us,” Mumba said.—Mana.
