Africa-Press – Malawi. President Lazarus Chakwera has spoken against perpetuation of hatred among Malawians, stressing that all people must be unified under one nation. He said this yesterday when he visited Mpundi and Moto villages, which are renowned for a wrangle that led to torching of houses for some villagers at Moto.
According to people of the two villages, angry police officers torched houses and detained a lot of people from Moto Village following the death of John Nkawajika, a then special branch agent and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) area operative, in 1971 who was allegedly killed by Masauko Chipembere’s followers for being suspected to be a spy of Kamuzu Banda following the infamous Cabinet Crisis.
‘We have forgotten the past because we have seen that President Chakwera is willing to unite Malawians. We want to live like all Malawians, without being attached to a dark history,” Group Village Headman Moto said. Later in the day, Chakwera met with late Chipembere’s family at Chikoko Bay, in the same spirit of fostering unity and reconciliation.
