President Lazarus Chakwera has called on Malawians to take responsibility for the country’s development.
He said that every citizen has a role to play in addressing the nation’s challenges.
Speaking Friday during the launch of the 2025 Raise the Flag Campaign Summit, an initiative of the Wealth Magazine, at Kamuzu Palace, Chakwera said being a patriotic citizen involves action — not just pointing out problems.
He said every day, each Malawian should be deciding whether to offer a service to the country as a solution to the many things that bedevil the nation or continue folding hands from the sidelines and point fingers at what other Malawians think is going wrong.
He said while it is easy to point out problems, it is more important to take action to solve them.
“Your service to Malawi is an inspiration to me as resident, to remember that no matter how tough things get in my service to Malawi, it is worth it because Malawi is worth it.
“And when I heard that Wealth Magazine was organising some citizens to celebrate independence by taking action and fix some of the problems you were seeing in the country, I wanted to meet these special citizens, “ Chakwera said.
He urged all Malawians to reflect on their role in serving the nation as the country celebrates 61 years of independence.
Wealth Magazine Chief Executive Officer Harry Chima said it is the responsibility of every Malawian to pursue the Malawian dream in line with the Malawi 2063 vision.
“Every Malawian has the responsibility to take action without waiting for the government to do for them.
“We can do our own tree restoration, build our own toilets in the communities and maintain our roads and many more,” Chima said.
He further challenged the nation to revive forgotten local industries.
Chima said the Raise the Flag Campaign seeks to address challenges such as weak public service, the preference for foreign goods and low self-esteem among Malawians.
The summit will be held under the theme ‘Redefining Our Culture, Revolutionising and Accelerating Growth.”
Wealth Magazine describes itself as an initiative “aimed at inspiring a national consciousness that fosters patriotism, self- reliance, a strong work ethic and responsibility.”
