Africa-Press – Malawi. Information Minister-cum-government spokesperson Moses Kunkuyu has called on Malawians to mourn Local Government deputy minister Joyce Chitsulo with responsibility and dignity.

He has warned against misinformation on social media during this time of grief.

Speaking during a funeral service held at Dzenza Ground in Area 25, Lilongwe, Kunkuyu cautioned the public against using the internet to circulate false claims about the deceased, saying such conduct dishonours the memory of the departed.

He stressed the need for unity and sensitivity.

“Moments of national loss should bring people together, not divide them through careless statements or online speculation,” Kunkuyu said.

His sentiments were raised as political party and parliamentary leaders paid tribute to Chitsulo, who was elected as Mwanza West Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) on Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) ticket and, until her death, served as deputy minister.

Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara described Chitsulo as a selfless leader who supported other people without seeking recognition.

“Joyce didn’t just rise— she lifted others with her. She steadied our wings when the wind blew hard,” Gotani Hara said. ‘Her fellow MPs are still waiting for her usual message on the forum. It’s been two quiet; days that feel too long.”

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) representative Deus Gumba also conveyed the party’s condolence message, describing Chitsulo’s death as a national loss.

“President Lazarus Chakwera has contributed K3 million to the bereaved family as a token of condolence,” Gumba said. “We will remember Joyce as a dedicated and hardworking woman with a heart for national development.”

The body of Chitsulo was collected from Goodwill Funeral Services in the morning and taken to Dzenza for a public service before being transported to her home village, Mpeni, in Thambani, Mwanza District.

She will be laid to rest today.

Chitsulo was recently injured in a car accident after returning from official duties in Mzuzu City.

Despite sustaining a leg injury, she continued to serve in her role before her untimely passing.

Chitsulo was born on May 27, 1978 and died on June 6 this year.
