Lilongwe City Council rescues Area 49 residents from OPC House land encroacher

Africa-Press – Malawi. The Lilongwe City Council (LCC) has assured Area 49, Sector 6 residents of land safety after some misguided individuals claiming from State House encroached land aimed for community development projects. The assurance comes after the residents penned the council on the matter on February 11, 2022 which was signed by the area’s block leaders.

The letter sent to Lilongwe City Council detailed that on February 10,2022, the residents were surprised after being a group of people led by one Mr Mfiti demarcating the land near Trinity Church located in the area.

When the community leaders confronted the people, they claimed that the land had been allocated to some individuals by the city council before they changed the version saying that they were sent by sinior officials from OPC.

The community leaders have therefore, requested Lilongwe City Council to stop the development taking place . They added that they will not allow any changes that will deprive them of education and health rights in the area.

Responding to the matter in a letter dated February 14,2022,the city council’s Chief Executive Officer John Chome confirmed to the block leaders that the land in the complaint letter was indeed designed by the council for a school and a community clinic to serve the growing population of the area.

Chome cleared out that the designation has not changed and will not change because the community needs land for a school for the education of its children as well as a clinic for its health needs.

” Land grabbing is a criminal activity and Lilongwe City Council will not let this to stand. I would like to assure the community of area 49 sector 6 that the City Council will evict these element,” said Chome in a letter. Prior to this, residents of the area stopped a Chenese contractor for Lilongwe Water and Sanitisation project from using the site for construction.
