Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi Police Service (MPS) in the capital Lilongwe are keeping in custody 39-year-old Fredrick Nyamula and recovered MK2, 174 000 which is part of the money that he and his colleague allegedly stole from an unnamed person in the city.
This incident is linked to the Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage of a criminal undertaking at Gateway Mall that has lately been circulating on social media.
Lilongwe Police Station public relations officer Hastings Chigalu told The Maravi Post that a total of MK6.5 million was stolen from the person who was being followed by the two.
“On January 4, 2023 a certain individual withdrew money from the bank at Gateway Mall amounting to MK6.5 million. The suspect, Nyamula, and his accomplice Khonya Makina, who were on a Honda Fit vehicle, followed the person who was driving a red (Nissan) X-trail vehicle after spotting him in the bank to have withdrawn large amount of money,” explains Chigalu.
Chigalu added that Nyamula and Makina followed the victim to City Mall where Nyamula was dropped to accomplish the mission while Makina went on to wait for his colleague at the nearby Mbowe Filling Station.
“After successfully stealing the bag containing the cash, the suspects went to Mchesi where a certain amount was left to Nyamula’s cousin, before proceeding to Blantyre,” he disclosed further.
Chigalu discovered that Nyamula instructed his cousin to distribute the money to different individuals and mobile money accounts. He said police have meanwhile intensified efforts to arrest Makina who is still at large.
Nyamula who is also known as Angozo among his peers, hails from Chimbulu Village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Machinjiri in Blantyre. He has since been charged with theft.
