Africa-Press – Malawi. Life expectancy in poor countries has increased more slowly than in rich countries, and too many children still die from preventable diseases. Many poor people lack clean water and sanitation, suffer from poor diets, and lack access to quality health care.
There are many things that make a poor nation poor. Poor countries usually suffer from ineffective governance, weak and unenforced regulatory structures, and corruption.
There is little support for small businesses, so the informal sector dominates and governments miss out on tax revenue. Poor countries need things such as basic needs for example food, nutrition, health services, education, water, sanitation, and shelter.
There’s a difference between rich and poor nations. Economic growth of less-developed economies is key to closing the gap between rich and poor countries.
Differences in the economic growth rate of nations often come down to differences in inputs (factors of production) and differences in TFP—the productivity of labor and capital resources.
Disadvantages of living in poor areas
There are immediate consequences of living in poor-quality housing, such as a greater risk of respiratory problems and increased stress from exposure to noise and overcrowding. Consuming the same calories from healthier food is on average three times more expensive compared to less healthy food.
Living In Poverty
Living on a low income increases parents’ stress levels, in turn affecting relationships and family dynamics. Increases in family income can boost children’s educational achievements and emotional and physical well-being.
Least Developed Countries (LDCs)
According to the United Nations, poor nations are called Least Developed Countries (LDCs). The least developed countries (LDCs) are low-income countries confronting severe structural impediments to sustainable development. They are highly vulnerable to economic and environmental shocks and have low levels of human assets.
There are currently 46 countries on the list of LDCs which is reviewed every three years by the Committee for Development (CDP). Unfortunately, Malawi is among those 46 Least Developed Countries, and from the look of things, the way Tonse Alliance Government is running its economy, Malawi is heading for another economic disaster in years to come as well approach 2023. The economic hardships in Malawi could hit harder than what the nation is going through today and the economic crisis may reach another alarming level.
LDCs have exclusive access to certain international support measures in particular in the areas of development assistance and trade. There are four kinds of poverty typically discussed: absolute, relative, situational, and generational. Absolute poverty is when one is unable to meet basic needs due to a lack of resources. Basic needs include food, clean water, and safe housing.
Conclusion
Malawi is a poor country today that is struggling and needs food, and nutrition for the majority of its citizens. The most affected areas that the government has failed to address are those places that were affected by Cyclone Freddy in early 2023 in the southern part of this nation. The vulnerable people who got displaced by the storm now survive on wild tubers and unripe mangoes. Tonse Alliance Government failed to open ADMARC depots up to date for the people to access and buy staple food (maize). Disturbing facts on the ground that ADMARC depots still remain empty without any Maize grain.
Health services continue to deteriorate as the Malawi government is failing to provide medicines in public hospitals and clinics throughout Malawi. If you haven’t fallen sick recently or didn’t have anyone who got hospitalized then you haven’t seen another level of poverty in poor Malawi.
Education standards have fallen sharply especially Form 4 examination results in 2023 could be the worst results in many years so far. The number of students who failed is on the highest side this year compared to all the years in the recent past.
Solutions
There’s only one solution to all this, Malawians need to kick out this Tonse Alliance Government from power and elect a different government. Other everyone and everything in Malawi will sink to the bottom of the deep sea.
