Africa-Press – Malawi. The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) has described courier service operators as crucial in the development of digital economy in the country,

Macra Director General Daud Suleman was speaking in Blantyre on Thursday during the opening of a data protection workshop for courier service operators.

He said with the digital economy characterised by the movement of goods and services from one point to another, that movement of value from a seller to a buyer must be a medium that has full protection and full trust.

“Courier services operators or parcel movement is playing a very critical role in ensuring that we develop digitally. That movement of parcels and goods and services forms a critical base for the digital economy,” he said.

President of Courier Association of Malawi Lewis McJessie said the meeting is coming at a right time as courier services are now going digital.

“One of the most important aspects is to make sure that the data we have is well protected.

“Data protection eliminates any other scam that may come in between. It is important to know who you are dealing with because we share a lot of information with customers and service providers,” McJessie said.

Areas tackled in the workshop included data protection principles and legal obligations of data controllers and data processors, technical and security measures and compliance checklist.
