Macra identifies Smart City land

Africa-Press – Malawi. The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) says it has identified a piece of land earmarked for its Smart City. A smart city is a technology-driven modern urban area that uses electronic methods and sensors to collect specific data.

Information gained from that data is used for managing assets, allocating resources and offering services efficiently, thereby improving operations. Macra Director General Daud Suleman told the Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts (Pac) that the smart city will be located at Mvera in Dowa District.

He said they are finalising all processes with the Ministry of Lands before they can start developing the area. “We are going to have a one-stop centre for all technological issues. This is a place where the digital economy and technologies will be built up.

“For all the technologies that the country intends to have, there is a need for this smart city to coordinate all the works of technology,” Suleman said. Pac Vice Chairperson Ned Poya expressed hope that the city will benefit the people of Malawi.

“We, as a committee, are happy that the smart city is now materialising. We believe that, through the city, many things will change technologically in Malawi,” Poya said. The Malawi 2063 vision singles out technology as one of the tools for growth.
