Africa-Press – Malawi. Blue Eagles have lodged a formal complaint with Super League of Malawi (Sulom) to further punish Mafco player Maurice Chiumia for unsporting behaviour.
Chiumia is at the centre of controversy for injuring Eagles attacking midfielder Micium Mhone in his side’s 1-0 loss at Chitowe Ground on Sunday. Eagles Chairperson Alexander Ngwala said the club was unhappy with Chiumia for injuring Mhone in an off-ball incident.
“This is uncalled for in a game of football. We encourage fair play. We want the player [Chiumia] to get punished,” Ngwala said.
Ngwala added that Mhone was likely to miss this weekend’s match due to the injury. The incident happened in the second half and the match had to be stopped for some minutes due to a scuffle.
Following the incident, Chiumia was given a straight red card whereas Stuart Mbunge was punished similarly for retaliation. Chiumia Tuesday said he was sorry for the incident.
“It was not my intention but I have talked to Micium and I have apologised to him,” he said.
Sulom President Tiya Somba-Banda could neither deny nor confirm receiving the complaint from Eagles. If found guilty, Chiumia’s ban could be extended.
In 2012, striker Diverson Mlozi (then playing for Nyasa Big Bullets) and Kondwani Banda, formerly of Kabwafu, were handed a two-match ban each for displaying unsporting behaviour in an off the ball incident.
