Africa-Press – Malawi. Prices of maize have begun to do down as people in some areas in the Southern Region have started harvesting. But vendors maintain the prices will rise once the new maize hits the market.

A snap survey by The Daily Times indicated that in Mangochi, a 50 kilogramme (kg) bag of maize is now being sold at K7,500 from K11,000 last month. This represents a 31.8 percent decline in the price in three weeks. However, prices of the commodity remain stable among vendors plying in the cities of Blantyre and Zomba at K11,000 per 50 kg bag.

The Daily Times

has also established that in Lilongwe the same quantity is selling at K9,000 while in Mzuzu a 50 kg bag is at K10,500. In an interview, Zingwangwa-based vendor Rodrick Phiri said prices of maize are likely going to rise once new maize stocks hit the market.

In an interview, Nasfam Head of Policy and Communications Beatrice Makwenda said they hope the prices will not go below the set minimum price. “If farmers sell this year at low prices, they will not be able to afford production next season,” Makwenda said.

Meanwhile, the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc) has said it is monitoring the moisture content in the produce before opening its markets. According to Admarc spokesperson Agnes Chikoko Ndovi, the parastatal has deployed a team to different parts of the country to gauge moisture content.
