Africa-Press – Malawi. The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) has observed a 10 percent decrease in the use of illegal weighing scales by traders. MBS Director of Metrology Thomas Malunje said intensified awareness campaigns across the country have helped in the compliance level.

Malunje made the statement at Mitundu and Chiseka trading centres on Wednesday in Lilongwe as part of the commemoration of the World Metrology day. “We are working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Malawi Police Service this has assisted us to register an increase in compliance rate,” Malunje said.

He added the bureau will continue to confiscate weighing scales that are not recommended by the bureau as one way of enforcing compliance. One of the business owners at Mitundu Trading Centre Samuel John said there is need for more awareness as most of the traders are not aware of the recommended scales by the bureau. As part of Commemoration the bureau is conducting awareness campaigns across the country.
