Africa-Press – Malawi. International and Local Organizing committees for 2022 Regional 5 Youth games have said Malawi is capable to host the games in December after touring the facilities in the capital, Lilongwe.

Chief Executive Officer for Regional 5 organizing Committee Stanley Mutoya on Friday, March 26, 2022 told the new conference that Malawi can meet the international standard and be able to host the games in six months time. Mutoya said this after touring and inspecting the facilities across the City,the committee is optimistic that Malawi will be able to host the games.

The committee have approved the following facilities to host the games,Silver Stadium, Civo Stadium to host football games,Athletics will be at Bingu National Stadium.Volleyball,Netball at the Griffin Saenda Indoor Sports Complex which is under construction, Aquatic games will be hosted at Aquatic Complex at Kamuzu Institute for Sports and all Indoor sports will take place at Bingu International Conference Center (BICC),Basketball games at ABC courts.

However, Mutoya said despite approving the above facilities there is a need of rehabilitation and maintenance to upgrade them to international standards.

He cited the turf at Silver Stadium, water drainage, tunnels, toilets, dressing rooms,at Civo roof,Face,Scoreboards and Floodlights to be rehabilitated and maintained, at ABC courts he said the fixed board must be removed and Turf at BNS for all grounds must be looked too.

Mutoya then appealed to give support to the contractors who are constructing different facilities such as Aquatic Complex and Griffin Saenda Indoor court.

“We are here now for the second visit to inspect venues for all the eleven sports codes including the demonstration sport which is global E-sport.The grass at Civo and Silver requires attention and there must be scoreboards at the same time drainage system so that it doesn’t get mud when raining.

“We are eye marking Civo Stadium as our main broadcast hence sometimes we may have games played in the evening so the floodlights must be repaired. Malawi can not fail,if it fails it will mean we have failed”, says Mutoya.

Emma Mabvumbe, Chief Executive Officer for Local Organizing Committee, said the country will make it possible to rehabilitate and maintain the facilities before the deadline.

This year the regional 5 youth games will be played under the theme ” IGNITING THE AFRICAN DREAM”. The games are slated for December in the country. Countries under region 5 namely: Zambia,Malawi,Mozambique, Elswatin, Lesotho,Namibia, South Africa,Botswana and Angola.
