Malawi joins global agreement in combating wildlife crimes

Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi has joined Costa Rica,Gabon and Angola in calling for preventing and combating wildlife crimes which will be embedded into the international criminal law.

Minister of Tourism, Michael Usi disclosed this on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 during the presentation of the countries statement on combating wildlife crimes.

Usi said the new agreement of wildlife crime will be taking the of a protocol under United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organised Crime (UNTOC) to stop the illicit trafficking. He calls for every citizen to be a watch dog to help in the prevention of exploitation.

Minister Usi said Malawi is determined to sustain its global reputation as well as impressive track record of tackling the illicit trade of ivory for which it has been recognized internationally.

In his Remarks,UN representative, Rudolf Schwenk said this is an important call as Malawi is one of the countries that faces the threats of wildlife crime.

Schwenk said the increased trends in poaching of animals including elephants and pangolins are very worrying and largely influenced by a growing demand for their ivory and scales on the international black market.
