Africa-Press – Malawi. The Association for Person with Albinism (APAM) has applauded the general public for registering zero case of abduction and killings of persons with albinism from January to march this year compared to last year.
APAM President, Young Muhamba disclosed this in an interview with Maravi Post on Saturday, March 5, 2022. According to Muhamba, 2021 same period, the Malawi registered three cases; one murder and two abductions.
He added that during the same period last year, 24 year old Said Daiton of kadewere Village T/A Chowe in Mangochi district was murdered,12 year old girl of T/A Kawinga survived abduction from two unknown assailants who broke into her home and 20 months girl in chikwawa district was abducted.
Muhamba observes that stiff punishment by the courts has helped in the reduce of the cases of the abduction and killings of persons with albinism in the country.
According to APM leader, the period under review had serious challenges as there huge backlog of cases that had to be cleared from past years and has contributed to the delays in concluding other cases.
He also said the association faces lack of collaboration among the justice stakeholders and delays of funding allocation for cases which has also caused the delay in the conclusion of some cases.
The country faces the high rate of abduction and killings of persons with albinism in 2019 as most cases where linked to elections fate of some politicians.
