Africa-Press – Malawi. LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Consumer Association of Malawi (CAMA) has condemned cooking oil companies and suppliers for lying to government and the nation that cooking oil price hiked due to Value Added Tax (VAT).

CAMA executive director John Kapito told The Maravi Post press statement on Tuesday, April 12, 2022 that despite government unwillingly removed 16.5 % VAT on the product but companies keep on increasing prices.

Kapito observes that the removal of VAT has made government to lose a lot of money which would have supported in both education and health sector. He said two years ago CAMA asked government to investigate the VAT matter on cooking oil through ministry of finance and trade fair and competition on the matter which could have been better before the removal.

Kapito added that is very sad that instead of the 16.5 VAT removal profits Malawian it is rather making profit to oil manufacturers. Currently, Competition Fair Trade Commission (CFTC) has threatened to take cooking oil companies, suppliers to court for duping Malawians following VAT removal.
