Malawi’s Flames bow down in COSAFA tourney

Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi National Football Team (THE FLAMES) on Friday were shown an exit door at this year’s Hollywood bets COSAFA tournament after a painful 1-1 stalemate against eSwatini at King Zwelinthini Stadium, Durban South Africa.

The game against Eswatini was a must win for Flames to revive their chances of progressing into the quarter finals. The dream slowly seemed to be coming true, as the vocal Polokwane City attacker Khuda Muyaba scored at 46th minute in the second half.

Head Coach Mario Mariana Marinica made five changes from the starting line up against Lesotho with Peter Banda, Micium Mhone, Kelvin Kadzinje starting for Flames, this looked promising as they could dominate the play with beautiful display from Peter Banda but still lacked killer punches upfront.

However as the whole nation thought their beloved Flames have carried the day, last minute jinx returned to haunt them as Eswatini was awarded a penalty at 92nd minute which looked a soft one but Zambian referee maintained his decision, Sabelo Ndzinisa converted past Clever Nkungula.

In another group B match,Lesotho defeated Mauritius by two goals to one,to keep it 100% record start as they now lead the group with 6 points while on second position are eSwatini who have managed to collect 4 points,Malawi comes third with 1 point and anchoring the group is Mauritius with no point.

Malawi has so far conceded three goals and scored 2,however the Flames have no any chance of reaching the second stage even if they win their last group B game against Mauritius at Princess Magogo Stadium on Sunday 10th July, 2022 as they can not overtake Lesotho on 6 points. Lesotho and Eswatini will fight for the quarter finals slot while Flames and Mauritius result will make no any difference.
