Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi Under 20 National Football Team produced a stunning performance on Saturday as they defeated South Africa 2-0 in their group C 2022 COSAFA Hollywood bets junior tournament opener.

The junior Flames scored in each half through Vincent Mkandawire at 25th minute and Captain Chifundo Mphasi at 66th minute respectively to sink South Africa and start their campaign on a high note.

Malawi showed some composure, confidence on the ball as they seemed to have followed what coach Patrick General Mabedi said to them. They outplayed South Africa in many departments.

South Africa had a chance to pull one back through a spot kick but Joshua Chirambo who was guarding the sticks for Malawi saved it. Malawi’s captain Chifundo Mphasi did not only score but also won the man of the match award.

The win means the Junior Flames are now topping the group C with 3 points and two goals seconded by Comoros Island who pulled a surprise against Namibia 1-0 at the same venue Somhlolo Stadium.

Patrick Mabedi side will return into action on 10 October in their second game of group C,they will play against spirited Comoros Island before finishing the group stages with Namibia on 12th October, 2022. In a postmatch interview, Malawi Coach Patrick Mabedi hailed his charges for playing under instructions.

“The players played very well,we had to match them in terms of formation which we did.In the second half we changed our tactical as we attacked them through counters.We have to forget this victory and prepare for our next game against Comoros Island”, Mabedi said.

Other results from other groups, Angola thrashed Lesotho by 5-0 margin,Mozambique also defeated Seychelles 5-0. On Sunday fixtures, the host e-Swatini battle it out against Zambia while Botswana will take on Mauritius. This year’s COSAFA Hollywood bets Youth games are used as qualifiers for 2023 Egypt Totalernegies CAF Africa Cup of Nations.
