Africa-Press – Malawi. The Blantyre Central Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court has sentenced Emmanuel Mvito to 7 years imprisonment with hard labour for attacking a Kabaza operator and robbing him of his motorcycle. Mvito attacked a motorcycle operator identified as Isaac Chirwa.

Sub Inspector Widson Nhlane who is Public Relations Officer of Ndirande Police said the court heard through the State Prosecutor Inspector Annies Chimenya of South Lunzu Police that on April 22, 2022 in the evening hours, Isaac Chirwa carried two female pillion passengers along Lambart earth road.

When he was passing by Maziyaya village, Emmanuel Mvito emerged from the bush and hit the rider on the head with metal object. Chirwa became unconscious and lost control of the motorcycle and fell down.

Emmanuel escaped with the motorcycle valued at K650,000 and the matter was reported to South Lunzu Police Unit who instituted investigations. After a fruitful follow- up on the report, Emmanuel was arrested and was positively identified by the complainant and the pillion passengers during an identification parade.

In court, he pleaded not guilty to robbery prompting the state to parade 5 witnesses to prove the robbery case beyond reasonable doubt and Emmanuel was consequently convicted. Upon his conviction, Emmanuel asked the court to be lenient when passing sentence considering his family obligation.

And in her submission, State Prosecutor Annies Chimenya, asked the court to impose a stiffer sentence saying the convict violently attacked the rider who sustained severe head injures and was admitted to the hospital for two weeks and that he also suffered a big loss since the motorcycle was not recovered. Passing sentence, his Worship Mphalulo Fatchi concurred with the state and sentenced Emmanuel Mvito to 7 years imprisonment with hard labour.
