Man killed after gold mine collapses in Ntcheu

Africa-Press – Malawi. A 64-year-old gold miner identified as Haswel Yona has died in Ntcheu after a heap of soil and rocks fell on him while he was in an open pit searching for gold.

Ntcheu Police spokesperson Rabecca Ndiwate said the incident occured at Likudzi river at Banda village, Sub Traditional Authority Tsikulamowa in Ntcheu district.

“Yona left his home for Likudzi river and started digging for the precious stone where it is alleged that he dug a deep open pit, and in the process, a heap of soil and rocks suddenly buried him,” she said.

She added that Police Officers from Senzani Police Unit accompanied by medical personnel from Manjawira Health Centre rushed to the scene. Postmortem by medical personnel at Manjawira health center has shown that death was due to hypoxia secondary to suffocation Yona hailed from Chilinde village, Traditional Authority Malili in Lilongwe district.
