Africa-Press – Malawi. The commission of inquiry on the arrest of Anti-Corruption Bureau Director General Martha Chizuma summoned lawmakers Tuesday. President Lazarus Chakwera instituted a 12-member commission of inquiry chaired by retired Justice Edward Twea, giving it 14 days to do its work.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Mulanje Bale Victor Musowa confirmed appearing before the Presidential Commission of inquiry on Martha Chizuma’s arrest. He said when he went to the venue of the appointment, he realised that the commission had also summoned other members of Parliament.

“When I was waiting outside, I observed that Peter Dimba [Chairperson for the Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament] was being questioned inside. I was informed that other MPs had already been questioned before me.

“All members of the commission, chaired by Justice Edward Twea, were present. I was asked if I knew prior that Chizuma was to be arrested and who may have ordered the arrest,” Musowa said.

Twea asked for more time when we asked him to tells whether the commission would finish its work within two weeks and whether funds were released to the commission. Recently, Information Minister Gospel Kazako said findings of the commission will help Chakwera make an informed decision on the arrest.

Chizuma was picked by the police from her home in Lilongwe in the wee hours earlier this month and was whisked away to Namitete Police Station on the western outskirts of the capital city.

The commission comprises former Ombudsman Enock Chibwana, former police inspector general Loti Dzonzi, Senior Chief Tengani, Reverend Elsie Tembo, accountant Innocencia Chilombo and Oxfam Director Lingalireni Mihowa. Others are Gift Mwakhwawa, Maureen Kachingwe and Cassim Mdalla Amuli, Monsignor Patrick Thawale and Frank Kalowamfumbi as administrative secretary.
