Africa-Press – Malawi. Match Foundation has appealed to the corporate world and individuals to invest more resources in tennis.
The foundation’s executive director Tadala Kandulu-Ngosi made the remarks at the end of the junior tennis championship which they organised at Lilongwe Golf Club on Saturday.
She said the country had a lot of talented tennis players but that such players do not realise their dream due to lack of support.
“We know that football, netball and other sport codes enjoy huge sponsorship. It is, however, not easy to get good sponsorship for minority sports such as tennis.
“We really want youngsters to participate in many tournaments. We are calling upon companies to come up with support mechanisms and promote partnerships so that we can take tennis to the next level,” Ngosi said.
Ngosi said local tennis players had the potential to win more medals in international tournaments.
The tournament attracted under-14 and 16 players from Lilongwe, Ntcheu and Blantyre.
One of the tennis coaches, Luke Tingo Nazombe, said the tournament served as a good platform for players to showcase their skills and talent.
“We need more tournaments for the players to compete. We have several good players but they lack exposure due to limited resources,” he said.
Under-14 champion in boys’ category, Augustine Moses, said the tournament was a yardstick for him.
“I played against some of the best players in Malawi but I was calm throughout the tournament. I think I deserved the victory,” he said.
All winners received prizes courtesy of Match Foundation.
