Africa-Press – Malawi. The governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Monday held its National Executive Committee (Nec) meeting in Lilongwe, the party’s spokesperson Maurice Munthali has confirmed.

President Lazarus Chakwera, who is also party president, attended the meeting held at the party’s national headquarters in the administrative capital. According to Munthali, the meeting mainly focused on the issue of strengthening and revitalising the party and its structures.

Asked whether the meeting touched on the issue of the party’s torchbearer in the 2025 presidential elections, Munthali said the issue of torchbearer was not on the agenda.

He said, with 2025 a distance away, Nec focused on how members must help Chakwera deliver on his promises to Malawians. “What we dwelled much on was rebuilding and revitalising our party structures so that we can begin afresh and with new energy as we move forward.

“We were also reminding one another of the mission that is before us; to help President Lazarus Chakwera, who is our party president, but also the State President, in his efforts to transform this country,” Munthali said. Early this year, some MCP top members went flat out endorsing Chakwera as the party’s torchbearer for 2025 presidential election.
