Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi Defence Force (MDF) boxer Ruth Chisale has signed a three-year deal with United Kingdom (UK) based Icon Sports Promotions. The deal offers Chisale a chance to train in the UK prior to international bouts. She is also entitled to world title fights.
Chisale’s manager Stephen Mawenzi Msiska refused to disclose the amount of money involved but sources claimed that the boxer could be earning millions in a fight.
“It is too early to pre-empt everything. However, I can confirm that it is one of the lucrative deals I have ever seen,” he said. Msiska said they were happy with the terms and conditions which they have agreed with the UK promoter.
According to part of the agreement, which Malawi News has seen, Chisale has granted the promoter the sole and exclusive worldwide right to arrange, promote or co-promote, where applicable, the boxer from the date of the agreement.
“The promoter shall use best efforts to promote the boxer her career and profile professionally throughout the world. For the avoidance of doubt, the boxer will not participate in any bout whatsoever without the express permission given in writing by the promoter, until such time that this agreement either expires or is lawfully terminated in writing.
“A bona fide bout offer shall be an offer by the promoter to the boxer of a bout specifying no more than the date and, where available, the venue or the opponent,” the agreement reads. According to the agreement, the deal will automatically be terminated if Chisale loses her first fight.
“If Chisale draws the first bout or the first bout is declared a no-contest or otherwise fails to achieve a decision, the boxer shall (if the promoter or sanctioning body so determines that this is necessary) agree to take part in a re-match for the same purse that she received for the first bout.
“It is understood and accepted by the boxer that all aspects of the re-match including but not limited to the timing, venue and opponent shall be at the promoter’s complete and sole discretion. In respect of the timing of any re-match the promoter agrees to act reasonably and in good faith,” read part of the conditions.
Chisale said she was excited to go into partnership with the promoter Azumah Cofie. “It is a dream come true. I need such kind of partnership to develop further. I will consult my employer [MDF] on how to go about it,” she said.
The development comes after Chisale called for IBF Africa junior welterweight title rematch against South Africa’s Hedda ‘The Shredder’ Wolmarans. Chisale, 24, boasts of 11 wins including six knockouts and two defeats. Her deal with Icon Sports Promotions is expected to expire at midnight on February 7 2025.
