Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi Defense Force (MDF) soldiers, who have been deployed to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for a peacekeeping mission, have been instructed to adhere strictly to the United Nations Code of Conduct and maintain discipline while performing their security duties.
The Chief of Military Operations for the Malawi Defence Force, Major General George W. Phiri, made the remarks at Chikala Hills in Machinga District during the closing ceremony of Peace Support Operations Training for soldiers who are going to maintain peace in the DRC.
Phiri said that every soldier deployed on a peacekeeping mission to another country is expected to adhere to the UN Code of Conduct, which includes avoiding alcohol consumption, smoking, engaging in sexual misconduct, and any inappropriate behavior, because they operate in different countries with diverse cultures.
The General said the training was successful despite several challenges, such as shortages of training equipment, and expressed confidence that Malawian soldiers will perform commendably in their peacekeeping duties.
He said the contingent going to the DRC consists of 731 soldiers, including 77 female soldiers, and that they are expected to stay in the DRC for one year.
“Malawians should have confidence that the soldiers we are sending to the DRC will perform commendably because they have received high-quality training, and we all know that they will be carrying the Malawian flag,” he said.
Speaking earlier, the Commanding Officer and trainer, Lieutenant Colonel Herbert Lemani, said the training began in September last year and was very successful because the soldiers learned a lot.
Lemani advised the soldiers to maintain good discipline, saying it is one of the core values of the MDF.
One of the soldiers, Wanangwa Soko, said commitment helped him complete the training and he is confident that he and his fellow soldiers will perform well and represent Malawi honorably.
