Africa-Press – Malawi. As the country is still experiencing fuel shortage, Malawi will completely go out of the commodity due to the druck drivers’ strike which is currently underway on their salary increase.
Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) Chief Executive Officer, Henry Kachanje told the Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, that 40 trucks are stuck in the country’s borders as truck drivers are on strike to force truck owners to adhere to their call.
Kachanje said the trucks are keeping 1.5 million litres of fuel which was supposed to sustain the country’s fuel crisis. Echoing the same, National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA), Public Relations Officer, Miclas Reuben said that currently, fuel debt is pegged at US$56million
He said the country’s fuel price is meager and is the primary factor of debt accumulation. Chairperson for the Committee, Welani Chilenga said the biggest challenge in the fuel package is the availability of forex.
Chilenga therefore urged authorities to resolve drivers’ issues for easy fuel transportation. “It is a national importance issue and every stakeholder involved should come together to solve the situation,” said Chilenga. Malawi is in a food, fuel, and forex crisis which President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse Alliance Government is unable to fix three years in power.
