MHRC bids farewell to commissioners

Africa-Press – Malawi. The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) on Thursday bid farewell to its seventh cohort of Commissioners that came into office in February 2020. MHRC had nine commissioners who included the Ombudsman and the Malawi Law Commissioner.

Speaking at a farewell event in Lilongwe, outgoing chairperson Scalder Louis said they are grateful for being given an opportunity to serve the commission for three years.

She said the outgoing commissioners have been one of the proactive cohorts that conducted 13 high profile cases. “The commissioners managed to represent the commission in international human rights conferences. We tried our best to safeguard the human rights of people.

“It is our wish that the incoming eighth cohort should carry on where they have left off,” Louis said.

Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda described human rights as key to upholding democracy and fighting corruption in the country. Nyirenda said MHRC has the much given powers to protect and promote human rights.

“The Constitution of Malawi gives power to the commission to investigate any rights violation in the country. The works of the commission are underrated, which ought not to be so. As government, we are committed to help the commission in every way possible,” Nyirenda said.

Law Commissioner Rosemary Kanyuka said Malawi Law Commission, together with the Ombudsman, have finalised the process of recruiting new commissioners.

She said they would soon be advertising the call for nominations of commissioners from CSOs. “Once the nominations have been done, we will look into it and then submit the names to the President to be appointed,” Kanyuka said. The outgoing commissioners are Louis, Baldwin Chiyamwaka, Chikondi Chijozi, Bertha Sefu, Sunduzwayo Madise, Boniface Massa and Stella Twea.
