Minister drums up support for hospitality industry

Africa-Press – Malawi. Minister of Tourism, Culture and Wildlife Michael Usi has called on government officials to support private individuals who are contributing to the growth of the hospitality industry in the country.

Usi made the call at Liwonde in Machinga when he opened the newly refurbished Liwonde Sun Hotel which is owned by businessperson Yusuf Sherriff. The minister expressed delight that some Malawians have been joining the government in promoting the tourism sector, hence, the need to be supported.

“Tourism is part of the Malawi Vision 2063 and the national investment master plan. There is need for government to provide a conducive environment to such investors so that they can be a part of promoting the industry.

“There is also need for civil servants to change their attitude towards work because this is derailing development of the country,” Usi said.

He said he was happy that the hospitality industry is slowly recovering from pangs of Covid pandemic. In an interview on the sidelines, Sheriff urged investors to come up with such investments in most areas in the country.

“I come from this area and I thought of coming up with the facility as part of promoting my home and also expanding the hospitality industry because now people will have a place to enjoy themselves,” Sherriff said.
