Africa-Press – Malawi. Minister of Labour Vera Kamtukule has emphasised the need to support micro industrial sites in the country’s cities to allow them to operate around the clock to enhance skills transfer and on-the-job trainings among the youth.

She said this would help create the much needed jobs in the country. This follows her recent visit to Biwi Triangle industrial site where she appreciated workshops and blocks housing technicians.

She said the site has a great value chain that is supporting a lot of people economically and creating more jobs, both formally and informally. “We need all stakeholders to support the expansion and growth of the site into a 24-hour industrial site. Challenges the site faces include power outages, lack of space and limited water supply.

“As government, we are aware that, for us to achieve the Mw2063, industrialisation is key. We cannot build new industries when we have existing industries that just need support and attention. In this view, we will work with other government ministries and agencies to see how we can bring back the glory of Biwi Triangle industrial area to achieve the Mw2063 objectives,” Kamtukule said.

Biwi Triangle is among the first industrial areas designated by government in the 1970s. Despite its high economic activity within the city, little attention has been paid to the site.
