Africa-Press – Malawi. Mining Minister Monica Chang’anamuno has urged private sector players to utilise India’s extended pigeon peas quota for Malawi to reduce the trade imbalance between the two countries.
India has extended Malawi’s quota for the 2024- 25 season, meaning that Malawian farmers can supply more produce than they have been supplying in previous years.
Chang’anamuno made the remarks during commemorations marking India’s 75th anniversary in Lilongwe on Friday.
“Let us utilise this great opportunity not only to increase the scope of trade between the two countries, but also to reduce the current trade imbalance between the two countries.
“Furthermore, this will bring to Malawi significant economic benefits such as fostering job creation and generating foreign currency, which will be beneficial to Malawian citizens,” Chang’anamuno said.
Recently, India granted a waiver on the export quota for pigeon peas from Malawi until 2026.
This means Malawi can export unlimited quantities of pigeon peas to India in the 2024-25 marketing season.
GOPALAKRISHNAN— I am happyMalawi and India signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the area of trade cooperation, which allows Malawi to export 50,000 metric tonnes of pigeon peas annually to India until 2026.
