Mission impossible for Malawi Queens at Commonwealth: Lose to Uganda

Africa-Press – Malawi. Dreams for Malawi national Netball team to finish on positions 5/6 in ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England have been shuttered and mission impossible following their 43 goals to 56 defeat to Uganda on Thursday, evening.

Queens trailed 11-14 in the first quarter, before going down to 24-28 at half time at the end of the game it was Uganda 56-43 Malawi. This is worst result for Malawi against Uganda losing with 13 goals margin, in 2021 at Pent Series tournament which took place in Namibia,

Uganda defeated Malawi 59-43 before the two sides equaled power scoring 44 a piece at the African Netball Championship in Namibia. In 2018 Queens lost to Uganda with 2 goals margin. Peace Chawinga side now will be hoping to finish on positions 7/8 as the position 5/6 is now a tall order.

However position 7 will not come on a Silver platter as they have to win against resilient Scotland on August 6.In 2018 Queens struggled to defeat the Scottish team as they won with just a goal.

It’s sad that Malawi who, for so many years, ruled African Continent is now struggling to teams like Uganda, South Africa, Zimbabwe whom they honorary taught them the sport.

When paired against Malawi the Proteas could sweat the whole body as they usually knew Malawi would baptize them but now they wish to play us in each and every tournament as we have turned into punching bag.

The success of these nations has not just come in a blue moon but their governments and stakeholders have invested much in the sport right from from grassroot.

There have been a long term policies and strategies at the same time transition has been the main key. Here we deny transition hence keeping on using the very same old players nwhose energy and stamina have corroded. As a country we have to believe in the youthful players we have but to cometary we give them a cold shoulder.

It’s time Malawi needed to utilise the MASSA competitions and as well as introducing youth netball tournaments across the nation in order to identify the talent that will positively contribute towards the success of Malawi Netball development.

To make the matters worse, Boom! Today you hear Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) and their own coach are exchanging words on which players have to go to certain tournament, tomorrow you hear NAM is failing to support annual report to Sports Council with this type of administration.

It is doubtful if we can develop the sport but rather keep on enjoying the old Glory and see Zambia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, South Africa beating us like puppets.

The number 6 plot at International Netball Federation (INF) ranking has been lost to Uganda, and let’s pray and fast that we manage to beat Scotland to maintain position 7 which Zimbabwe, Namibia, Zambia are also eying.

Meanwhile,Malawi’s only boxer at the tournament, Lewis Zakeyu Mbewe has bowed out of the competition. Mbewe retired in round 2 after receiving heavy punches from Welsh Fighter,Loan Croft.

The boxer managed to defeat a Sierra Leone International, Yousuf Deen Kargbo days ago. Mbewe was fighting in 63.5Kg-67Kg Welterweight men’s quarter finals.
