“MK18bn needed for restoring Kapichira hydro electric power station”-Energy Minister Matola

Africa-Press – Malawi. President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse government is expected to cough MK18 billion for the reconstruction of Kapichira hydro electric power station which has been destroyed by cyclone Ana.

Minister of Energy, Ibrahim Matola told the nation on Friday, February 11, 2022 in the capital Lilongwe during Face the press program. Matola said the restoration is expected to be done in six months time with the cost of MK5 billion for the damaged equipment.

He said the destruction has lead to the lost of 130 megawatts from the total 300 megawatts which the country has in total. The minister added that the country is expected to have load shedding six hours daily to enable every Malawian to have access to electricity.

He said government is expected to start the construction of Mpatamanga Hydro power electoral station to increase the electricity generation in the country.
