Africa-Press – Malawi. Moroccan ambassador to Malawi Abdelkader Naji has urged Malawians to demonstrate maturity and ensure free, fair and democratic elections this September.
Naji expressed hope that Malawians would conduct themselves in a manner that serves as an inspiring model for African democracies.
He made these remarks in an interview as his country celebrates the 26th anniversary of the ascension of King Mohammed VI to the throne, also known as Throne Day.
Malawians will go to the polls on September 16 to elect a president, members of Parliament and local government councillors.
“I am convinced that Malawians, in addition to their warm hearts, kindness, wisdom and respect, will demonstrate greater maturity and will set an example of democratic and transparent elections, which will certainly be conducted peacefully and will undoubtedly serve as an inspiring model for mature African democracies,” Naji said.
He hailed the cordial bilateral diplomatic ties between his country and Malawi and commended Malawi for being among the countries that recognise Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.
“Morocco and Malawi share common values and aspirations, as well as a commitment to a united, stable, developed and prosperous Africa. They also share a fundamental African feature: the warm heart of Africa,” Naji said.
He added that the two countries cooperate in several sectors, including agriculture, food security, mining, tourism, education and economic development.
According to the envoy, the two countries also support each other in regional and international forums, including the African Union and the United Nations.
He said a bilateral cooperation roadmap for 2022–2024 was signed, focusing on key sectors such as education, economic promotion, security, and food security and is being actively implemented with ongoing projects and events, such as the Malawi Economic Promotion Week in Morocco.
The ambassador said that since his ascension to the throne, King Mohammed VI has adopted a long-term vision, a proactive approach and a commitment that have enabled Morocco to achieve considerable national progress in building a modern and democratic society.
