Africa-Press – Malawi. Senior Resident Magistrate Felix Kamtsalira on Friday, August 19, 2022 granted bail to Mzuzu City Mayor Gift Desire Nyirenda who is answering defilement charges.
Nyirenda was arrested on August 14 on suspicion that he defiled a girl below the age of 16. Magistrate Kamtsalira said despite the gravity of the offence which can attract life imprisonment sentence.
The magistrate argued that the suspect is not a flight risk as he is someone who is well known in society and has a position. The court therefore ordered Nyirenda to surrender all travel documents to Mzuzu regional police office, not to move out of Mzuzu without notifying police.
The suspect was also ordered to pay MK500 000 cash bail bond and to also provide two sureties each bonded at MK1,000,000 non cash among others. Mzuzu City Council is yet to make a determination on Nyirenda while answering defilement charges.
