Africa-Press – Malawi. Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) has disclosed plans to establish structures to cater for men’s netball.
The development comes after Nam received an invitation to include a men’s national netball team to be part of next month’s Africa Netball Championship in Namibia.
Yamikani Khunga-KaumaNam General Secretary Yamikani Khungwa- Kauma said they were ready to implement World Netball’s agenda.
“Our position is that of World Netball (WN) and we are keen to include men’s netball in our Nam initiatives. This is in line with the WN strategy, which requires members to incorporate men in netball so that netball can also become an Olympic sport,” Khungwa-Kauma said.
The Nam GS said the forthcoming Africa Netball Championship would give Nam and other stakeholders a chance to see how they could establish men’s netball.
“Everything has a beginning. This is an opportunity for us to work on this area as our friends have done. I believe that once we showcase this team and its great capability, our community and sponsors will be able to appreciate and support our activities towards having men play the sport as well,” Khungwa-Kauma said.
Currently, she said Nam is working together with the men’s team to mobilise funds for the team’s participation.
One of the men’s netball organisers Ebenezer Davite was confident that potential partners would support the side to realise its dream of playing at international level.
“We are asking well-wishers, be it individuals or organisations, to help us with materials, services or cash to enable us to travel.
“We want to participate in the inaugural tournament. Malawian men play good netball; so, this is an opportunity to showcase that at a bigger stage. We have watched teams like Zambia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and others. We believe we have good players who can compete and represent us well,” Davite said.
